Privacy Policy

Protocol AI Lab (https://protocol-ai-lab.com) is run by one person, J. Kim. This page explains what information the site handles, why, and what you can do about it. It describes how this site actually works, not a generic template. A short Korean summary is at the end.

In short

  • There are no visitor accounts, no newsletter and no marketing emails.
  • The calculators, the SIP Call Flow Visualizer and the demos run in your browser. Numbers, text and files you put into them are not sent to this site, except the address you enter in the product listing demo, which requests a synthetic page from this site (details below).
  • Personal information reaches the site in three ways: the contact form, comments on posts, and the hosting server’s access logs.
  • Google shows ads on this site and uses cookies to do so. You can turn off personalized ads with the links in the advertising section below.
  • The site does not run a separate visitor-analytics tool such as Google Analytics.

Calculators, tools and demos: processed in your browser

The deposit and savings calculator, the bond yield calculator, the SIP Call Flow Visualizer and the demo apps under /demos/ do their work with JavaScript in your browser. What you type, paste or open in them (amounts, SIP traces, spreadsheet files, photos) is not uploaded to this site. SIP traces can contain phone numbers and IP addresses, and they also stay in your browser. The one exception is the collect-by-address button in the product listing demo, which requests the synthetic wholesale page at the address you enter from this site, so that request is recorded in the server access log like any other page visit. Addresses of other sites are not requested.

Some demos save your changes in your browser’s local storage so they are still there when you come back. Examples are saved filter presets in the photo filter demo, the listing queue in the product listing demo, program and text-size settings in the study travel demo, and the sample entries in the personal ledger demo. This data stays on your device and is not sent to the site. You can remove it by clearing this site’s data in your browser, and the ledger demo also has a reset button. Demo data is made up, so please do not enter real personal or financial information.

CSV files you export from a calculator, and files you export from a demo, are created in your browser. The data files linked from posts (CSV, ZIP and PDF) are ordinary files on this site. Downloading one is recorded in the server access log like any other page visit.

Contact form

The Contact page uses the Contact Form 7 plugin. When you send a message, the form passes your name, email address and message to J. Kim by email. They are used only to read and answer your message. No add-on that stores form messages in the site database is installed.

Messages are kept in J. Kim’s mailbox while they are needed to answer you and follow up, and are deleted if you ask. Please do not send passwords, API keys or other private data through the form.

Comments

Posts accept comments. When you leave a comment, WordPress stores the name, email address and website you enter, your comment, your IP address and your browser’s user agent string. Your name, website and comment are shown publicly once the comment is published. Your email address is not shown.

WordPress can also save your name, email address and website in cookies in your browser so you do not have to type them again next time.

Comments can show a small profile picture from Gravatar, a service run by Automattic. WordPress makes a hash (a fixed-length code) from the email address you enter and puts it in the picture’s address at secure.gravatar.com. The hash does not show your address, but it is visible in the page, and the same address always gives the same hash, so someone who already knows your address can match it. When a comment is displayed, the browser of the person viewing it loads the picture from Gravatar, so Gravatar receives the hash together with that viewer’s IP address and browser details. If no Gravatar picture is linked to the address, Gravatar shows a plain placeholder picture instead. See Automattic’s privacy policy for how Gravatar handles this data.

Spam filtering (Akismet)

The site uses Akismet, a spam-filtering service from Automattic. When Akismet checks a comment or a contact-form message, the text you wrote, the name and email address you entered, your IP address, your browser’s user agent and the referring page are sent to Automattic’s servers so the service can decide whether it is spam. See Automattic’s privacy policy for how Automattic handles this data.

Server access logs

The site is hosted by SiteGround. Like most web servers, it writes one log line for each request. A line contains the IP address, the date and time, the page or file requested, the response code, the referring page, the browser user agent and technical details of the encrypted connection.

These logs are used to keep the site running and secure and to find problems, for example to check whether search engines can reach a page. They are not used for advertising and are not combined with other information to identify you. The host keeps them for a limited time under its own settings. When J. Kim downloads a copy for a specific check, the copy is kept outside the public site and deleted when the check is finished.

Security check by the host

SiteGround’s security system sometimes shows a short browser check before a page opens, for example when traffic looks automated. When your browser passes the check, a cookie is set so the check does not repeat on every page. This cookie is used only for security.

Advertising and cookies from Google

This site uses Google AdSense to show ads.

  • Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites.
  • Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this site and/or other sites on the Internet.
  • Other ad companies that work through Google may also show ads here and may use their own cookies.

Protocol AI Lab cannot read or control these cookies.

Opting out of personalized ads

  • Turn off personalized advertising in Google’s Ads Settings at https://adssettings.google.com.
  • Opt out of some third-party vendors’ use of cookies for personalized advertising at https://www.aboutads.info.
  • Block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Ads may still appear, but they will be less personalized.

Google explains its side in How Google uses cookies in advertising and How Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services.

Who receives information

  • SiteGround (hosting) holds the server logs and the WordPress site, including comments.
  • Automattic (Akismet) receives the comments and form messages it checks for spam.
  • Automattic (Gravatar) receives the email hash in each comment’s picture address, and the IP address of the visitor whose browser loads that picture.
  • Google receives ad requests and handles advertising cookies under its own policies.
  • The email service that delivers contact-form messages to J. Kim holds those messages.

The information you send through the form or in comments is not sold or rented to anyone. These services may process data in countries other than your own.

Your choices and rights

You can ask to see, correct or delete the personal information the site holds about you, which means your contact messages and comments. Send the request through the Contact page. You will get an answer within one month. Depending on where you live (for example under the EU or UK GDPR, California privacy law or Korea’s Personal Information Protection Act), you may have further rights, such as objecting to processing or complaining to a data protection authority. Advertising-cookie data is held by Google and the ad companies, not by this site, so use the opt-out links above for that.

Children

This site is written for adult readers and is not aimed at children under 14. It does not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you think a child has sent personal information through the form or a comment, please get in touch and it will be deleted.

Changes to this policy

When the way the site handles information changes, for example when a plugin or tool that processes visitor data is added, this page and the date at the top are updated.

For questions about this policy or about your information, contact J. Kim through the Contact page.
